September finds the Detroit Tigers sitting five games up on the Chicago White Sox, and five and a half games up on the Cleveland Indians. Several key additions over the course of the last few months have aided the Tigers in remaining in the top spot, including this month's featured player, Delmon Young. Since acquiring Delmon on August 15, the Tigers have gone 10-5, and I believe that Delmon has played every game.

Some notable series yet to be played in September start this weekend with a 3-game set against the White Sox. All in all, the Tigers will play the White Sox six times in September, and they will play the Indians six times. It will be an exciting month of baseball!

The next six games at home are critical for the Tigers if they hope to make up any ground in the division. They start tonight by facing the 5th place Indians and then the 4th place Royals come to town. If the White Sox and Twins can manage to drop a few during this stretch, the Tigers could close the gap somewhat.

Call me the eternal optimist, but if the Tigers get hot during this home streak, maybe they can ride that into the Toronto series and then the series in Minnesota. I'd really like to see the Tigers make a final push to make the playoffs, but it all has to start with this six game home stretch.

A lot has been said about all the money coming off the books for the Tigers at the end of this year due to free agency. And $60M is quite a bit of money.

So, what does this mean for the team? Well, there are some critical areas that need to be addressed on the team, one of which is the catcher. Here are some of the available catchers in 2011, who Dave Dombrowski might go after during the off-season.

So looking at these available catchers, I find myself torn between two players: John Buck and Miguel Olivio. Both are younger, have reasonable contracts, and decent OPS. I am leaning towards Miguel Olivio because of his higher Caught Stealing %, but that isn't a major concern of mine. Ultimately, I see the Tigers offering a nice contract to one of these two players, which would be a huge improvement over G-Money, and would give Alex Avilia some more time to develop.

After the homestand, the All Star game takes place in Cali, where hopefully we'll see this month's wallpaper representative. I know he's a rookie, but I really believe that Brennan Boesch deserves a nod to participate in the game.

The bats of the Detroit Tigers were on fire today. The team rocked the Nationals for 19 hits with nearly each batter contributing at least 2 hits. The only batters to go hitless were Don Kelly, 0-4, and Danny Worth, 0-1, who came in as a pinch runner for Raburn.

The Tigers are now on a 6-game winning streak and start a 3-game series tomorrow against the Diamondbacks.

Tigers sweep the A's out of their own park

Well that was nice. After a rough game against the Chicago White Stockings, the Tigers had a plane ride to the west coast to face the A's. As I was hoping, Justin Verlander is back to his old self again and totally dominated the Athletics while pitching a complete game. Then, to our surprise, Jeremy Bonderman pitched himself a pretty nice game yesterday. Bondo had eight strikeouts and was unhittable through four innings.

The Tigers start a three-game series again the Dodgers today, before heading to Seattle to wrap up their west coast trip.

Radio coverage rant

I know Florida is a long way from Michigan, and I know it's only Spring Training baseball, but so far, I've only heard one game broadcasted on the radio. I'm not in Detroit, so that may be part of the reason I'm not hearing that many games, but I am in Grand Rapids, so you would think that with two sports stations in town, at least one might cover the game. However, here it is, 2:15 on Tuesday afternoon, and no game to listen to. I might think about subscribing to MLB radio so I could listen online, but my company's IT department has blocked streaming audio and video. Oh well, the regular season will be here soon enough, and then all the games will be on the radio.

Tigers sign Damon....finally

The waiting game is finally over. After weeks of talking, the Tigers and Johnny Damon have agreed to a 1-year deal reportedly worth $8 million. He will spend most of his time playing left field and DH.

Now that this is ordeal is finally over, we can now focus on the rest of the team and identifying the best prospects to fill out the 25-man roster.

Now that the season has been flushed down the toilet, I decided it was time to move on. That is, move on to next year. The Tigers have quite a few personnel decisions to make during the offseason.

At this point, I'm only going to discuss the potential starting lineups. I realize there will be other batters on the bench, but that's going to be another post. Additionally, the pitching rotation and who stays and leaves is another post.

Another season done. Another opportunity wasted. Another division lead lost.

My hopes for this season were high. Last year was a huge disappointment, so I was looking forward to a bounceback year for the Tigers. While many fingers could be pointed, I think it's too early to assume what will happen with the Tigers organization. I'm sure we'll hear many cries for Jim Leyland to be fired (my current Facebook status), along with calls to re-sign certain players and to drop others. I imagine we'll start seeing more information on signings and releases in the next few weeks.

This was a rough ending to the season, but as we always say around here, "There's always next year!".

No hunger tonight

Watching the Tigers game right now, and there is just no hunger in the Tigers tonight. They are simply not into it tonight. They don't seem eager to get to the plate, and when they do, they don't seem to have the desire to hit the ball.

The Twins are winning as well, so it looks like the Tigers will have a one game lead after tonight with two games to go. It looks like we might have to rely on Justin Verlander and Zach Greinke on Sunday to help us squeak into the playoffs.

Huge win

Yesterday's win in the Metrodome was huge for the Tigers. On the verge of being swept in the series, they managed to win their final game in that horrible stadium and push their lead in the AL Central back to three games.

Now, we head into Cleveland for a three game series against a floundering Indians team that has lost eight in a row. I don't want to jinx them and predict a sweep, so I'm rooting for a 2-1 split in the series.

The Twins are heading to Chicago to face a White Sox team that has lost four of its last five games. As much as it pains me to do, I'm going to be rooting for the White Sox to win that series.

If the Tigers go 2-1 against Cleveland, and the Twins go 1-2 against Chicago, our lead will be 5 games with 10 games remaining. As much as I'd love for the Tigers to have wrapped up the AL Central title by now, this race is just far too exciting. Those last seven games at Comerica Park are going to be absolutely insane!

Ernie Harwell has cancer

Ernie Harwell, the legendary voice of the Detroit Tigers, has incurable bile duct cancer. MLive has a complete story on their site.

My memories of Ernie are similar to many other Tigers fans. From those late nights listening to the radio in the living room, or hearing him call games as I did homework, Ernie's ability to call the game is unsurpassed.

I am saddened to hear of the diagnosis, but am always going to treasure those memories of him calling the games. Best of luck to you Ernie!

The last full month of baseball is here, and the Detroit Tigers are still in the mix. As of today, the Tigers are sitting atop the AL Central.

The Twins are currently in a series against the White Sox, and the Twins are only 3.5 games behind Detroit. Somehow, the Tigers have mostly AL Central opponents during September, with Tampa and Toronto being the only two opponents outside our division.

The regular season ends with two series at home against the Twins and the White Sox. Those two series could decide who wins the AL Central. To be honest, I don't think I'd want it any other way.

Youkilis is a moron and fights like a girl

In case you missed the game last night, Porcello didn't last too long thanks to the stupid umpires. Porcello was facing Youkilis to start the 2nd innning, and when one of Porcello's pitches hit Youkilis, he charged the mound. Porcello seemed genuinely surprised that Youkilis charged him, and put up his hands to show that it was an accident. That didn't slow Youkilis down though, and he threw his batting helmet at Porcello. Who throws their batting helmet at their opponent????? Apparently big sissies do.

I have to give credit to Porcello at this point. He was backpedaling when Youkilis tackled him, but Porcello managed to stay on his feet. And then Porcello managed to spin Youkilis around and throw him to the ground.

Obviously Youkilis was ejected for rushing the pitcher, but then the umpires decided to toss Porcello. Now I would have normally expected both benches to get a stern warning after this, but the umpires decided to take the game into their own hands and toss Porcello.

This incident, or something like it was coming. Cabrera was hit by a pitch last night, and also in the first game of the Boston series. The difference is, Cabrera acted like a real man, and went to first base (except for last night he had to go to the training room because he was hit on the hand). Youkilis, on the other hand, acted like a moron and a idiot for charging the mound.

I think this game could be pivotal in the Tigers season. I was proud that the entire team came out of the dugout and the bullpen, and even Cabrera came out of the training room to join the brewhaha. No one stayed in the dugout and bullpen. This shows me how much of a team the Tigers really are. I fully expect them to come out in tonight's game and crush Josh Beckett.

Last night's game is hopefully what the doctor ordered for the Tigers. The win broke a streak of seven straight road losses. Hopefully the winning continues at Cleveland this weekend.

Another question looming over the Tigers right now is if they will make any real roster moves before the trade deadline. Carlos Guillen is now back, and he has made contributions since his return. The Tigers also traded Josh Anderson to the Royals for cash, but I don't consider that a true roster change. Matt Holliday was traded to the Cardinals, so that squashes the trade I proposed in my last post. There's only a day left before the trade deadline, so we'll have to see if the Tigers decide to pull the trigger on a last-minute trade.

Off day

Well, the Tigers have an off day today, and I think it comes at a good time. In case you missed it, the Tigers were swept this weekend by the Pinstriped Evil Empire of New York. However, the fault was not with the pitching as those guys were great on the mound. The lack of run support came back to bite us in each of the games. Hopefully the off day will give the Tigers a chance to correct their swings and get back to scoring runs.

I keep hearing on sports radio that maybe the Tigers should consider trading for Roy Halladay. However, I submit to you that the Tigers need someone to come in and spark their bats. Another player whose name has been tossed around is Matt Holliday. Compared to last year, he's having a down season. With our arsenal of well-stocked minor league prospects, I would hope that Dave Dombrowski is at least looking to move a few kids to acquire someone of Holliday's caliber.

The Tigers begin a seven game homestand tomorrow against the Mariners and the White Sox. With the White Sox only 1.5 games behind Detroit, winning at least five of these home games is very important.

The second half of the 2009 season is off to a rocky start, but the Tigers have a chance to turn it around at home this week.

Back from vacation

My apologies for not posting as of late. With two kids in school, the year-end activities kept me and the wife pretty busy. Then, my wife and I took off to celebrate our 10-year anniversary, and there was golf to be played and beaches to be sat on, so updates were far from my mind. And, to top it all off, work has been absolutely crazy busy for the past six weeks, so I've had very little free time. I promise that I'll try to be more frequent in my posting on here.

On a Tigers related note, the Sporting News released their latest Power Poll. They have the Tigers ranked #4 moving up three spots from last week. I don't hold too much stock in these ranking systems, but it's an interesting read nonetheless. Short break from baseball

This is a Detroit Tigers baseball blog, but every once in a while, I need to give a shoutout to something else. In this case, that something else is the Detroit Red Wings.

Unless you live under a rock, you probably know that tonight is Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. This has been one of the best Finals series I've ever watched, and I cannot wait for the puck to drop.

Here's the wallpaper for the month of June. As of last night, the Tigers are sitting at the top of the AL Central division with a 3.5 game lead on the KC Royals. Except for that hiccup of a series against the Rockies, the Tigers have won three of the last four series.

The Tigers head to Baltimore for a four game series and then come back to Detroit for two series. Now is the time for the Tigers to put some serious distance between them and the rest of the division.

Last night, the Tigers' bats were on fire. Two grand slams, one for Ryan Raburn and one for Brandon Inge. This was really great to see after the disappointing series loss to the Twinkies in the sagging Metrodome. Let's hope the bats stay on fire throughout this series and the rest of the month. I think it's critical for the Tigers to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the division.

My apologies for the lack of posting lately. I've been absorbed by two things these past couple of weeks, the NFL draft and my actual job.

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you'll know that I am a Detroit Lions fan. Unfortunately, I found their selections from the NFL draft this past weekend to be rather disappointing. But I digress. This is my Detroit Tigers blog, not my "The Detroit Lions will never amount to anything under the ownership of William Clay Ford!!!!!!!!!!!" blog.

On a happier note, the Tigers won the series against the Royals over the weekend by eeking out a 3-2 victory on Sunday. The boys return home to face the Yankees in a three game series. Let's keep the winning going!

Mark "The Bird" Fidrych

I'm sure you've heard by now that Mark Fidrych passed away yesterday from an accident on his farm. I can't add anything to what is being said by the papers around Michigan except for my personal memory of Mark.

I never met him in person, and I was too young to remember him on television. However, I was watching the last game at Tiger Stadium with a friend, when during the post-game ceremonies, Mark jogged out to the mound. Then, out of his back pocket, he produced a small plastic bag. He scooped up some of the dirt from the pitcher's mound and put it in the bag. I'll never forget that moment.

Your friendly and outgoing personality will be missed Mark!

Tigers sweep the Rangers

Riding the coattails of Brandon Inge's hot start, the Tigers scored six runs in the eight inning yesterday to sweep the formerly hot Rangers.

The Tigers begin a three game series at home against the White Sox today. Let's hope they keep the winning streak going.

Earlier this year, I asked you, the blog reader, to let me know if you were going to Lakeland to watch the Tigers prepare for the 2009 season. Overwhelmingly, the majority of you would love to be in sunny Florida, but money seems to be holding you back. You can count me as one of those individuals.

Sheffield is gone!

In a move that caught everybody off-guard, the Tigers released DH Gary Sheffield today. They will have to eat the $14 million remaining on his contract, but I feel that's a small price to pay to get someone in the lineup who doesn't pop-up every time he comes to the plate.

So what does this mean for the Tigers? Well, with the very recent acquisition of Josh Anderson, there are a couple scenarios:
1. Marcus Thames becomes the DH.
2. Carlos Guillen becomes the DH, Josh Anderson takes over in left field, and Marcus remains on the roster to fill the occasional outfield spot.

Personally, I think Thames deserves the chance to play the DH spot. His numbers from last year are certainly better than Sheffield's, and he is always a threat to send the ball into the stands. If things don't work out with him in that spot, then move Guillen to DH. Josh Anderson is a decent outfielder, and most importantly, he is a left-handed hitter. The Tigers needed to add another left-handed batter to the roster, and this certainly fills that need.

Utimately, time will tell if this was a good move, or bad decision-making by Dombrowski and Leyland. Let's just hope that Sheffield doesn't hit #500 off a Tiger pitcher.

Blog re-design

As you can see, I've been working on re-designing the blog. I was tired of the stale template that blogger had provided, so I decided to change it up a little. There are probably going to be more changes over the next month, but nothing major.

Also, I've added a new gadget on the left. Courtesy of ESPN, you can now view the current MLB standings. While not earth shattering, I thought it would add a little more info to the blog.

I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions for enhancing the blog. Thanks for reading!

Detroit Lions Update

I wasn't planning on posting any updates on here until spring training started, but I felt this important to post.

After a dismal and disappointing 0-16 season, the Detroit Lions have fired head coach Rod Marinelli and most of the coaching staff. I must say that I'm surprised this happened so fast, despite their record this year. Typically, the Lions would wait for months before making such a decison, but apparently they decided to move quickly. In a disappointing side note, the Lions promoted Martin Mahew to GM, instead of hiring fresh blood from outside. I was really hoping we would get someone from outside the current organization to bring a fresh perspective to the team.

Well, now us Lions fans have to wait until April for the draft and hope that management doesn't screw that up and set us back another 2-3 years.

Well, I think we all have to be honest with ourselves and say that we entered this baseball season with high hopes. Sadly, the 2008 season ended Monday night with a whimper instead of confetti and champagne.

As I stated back on February 18, our entire season hinged on the starting rotation and the bullpen. This year was not kind to our starters and pulling together a rotation from the bullpen, the minors, and free agency was nightmare-ish at best for the coaching staff. As a result, the pitching coaches have already been fired.

Starting in August, I asked the readership to give their predictions as to what changes should occur in the Tigers organization before 2009. Your input is below.

As you can see, pitching dominated the predictions. Coaching changes have already taken place (with Dave Dombrowski already stating that Leyland has his job for next year). And who knows if we'll see more young guys appearing on the ball diamond in April.

This offseason should be interesting to watch as pieces are shuffled around, faces come and go, and the roster begins to take shape for next year. Let's just hope that when April rolls around, we'll all have high expectations for our Detroit Tigers.

Changes in the future??

Well, despite their hold on the NL Wild Card, the Milwaukee Brewers decided to part ways with head coach Ned Yost. I'm assuming the reason is because the Brewers are in a slump right now, and hoping that a changing of the guard will get the team back to its winning ways.

So, what does this mean for the Tigers? Not much, but if a wild card team can oust their manager in mid-September, what should/will a team that was susposed to win the World Series do at the end of their disappointing year? I'm not laying sole blame on the Tigers flop on Jim Leyland, but he sure hasn't made it easy for us Tigers fan this year.

When Leyland joined the Tigers in 2006, I thought it was a good change. He brought a lot of experience with him. Winning experience. And the change in the Tigers team was immediately evident. However, since making it to the World Series that year, the Tigers have tried to replicate their success through trades, acquisitions, and position changes. (Let's just say that I'm not a fan of Farnsworth, of letting Sean Casey go, and positional merry-go-round with Cabrera, Inge, and Guillen. And don't get me started on the starting rotation and bullpen. Just leave Bobby Seay in the game and stop pulling him!)

I'm a fan of the line-up we have right now, however, I feel that we need to make some drastic changes in the starting rotation and bullpen this year. And, the coaching is not immune either. Perhaps a change at the dugout steps will right the ship and get the Tigers back to where they belong, the playoffs and beyond.

Upcoming series

The Tigers haven't been performing up to snuff as of late, but if they want a chance to get back into the AL Central race, the rest of August is the time to do it. Their next five series are against Baltimore (.483), Texas (.500), Kansas City (.446), Cleveland (.450), and Kansas City (.446).

As of today, the Tigers are 59-62 (.488), and 9.5 games out of first place. If there ever was a time to play for the postseason, it's in these next five series. I believe we have to go 12-3 in these five series in order to have any shot of catching the White Sox/Twins. If we can't beat these .500 or below teams, then there is no way we will have anything to play for in September.

Be sure to vote in the poll to the right. You can select more than one option, so let me know what you think the Tigers will be doing during the off-season.

Okay, if you were wondering why I haven't posted on here for over a week, it's because I've been slamming my head against the wall in fustration with the Tigers bullpen. I can't recall feeling more fustrated over these past few weeks than I have in a while.

I'm about ready to throw in the towel for the 2008 Tigers season and wait to see what happens with the rest of the league. Despite my disappointment with the Tigers, there are some tight races in quite a few divisions and should make for an interesting September.

Here's the results from last month's poll. While the playoffs are certainly not out of the picture, if the Tigers keep having the same darn luck with their bullpen, then the 22% of you who chose an early winter are going to be spot on.

Tigers Sweep the Royals

The Tigers swept the Royals in amazing fashion yesterday. Armando Galarraga was teetering on the verge of a perfect game until David DeJesus broke it up with a hit in the seventh. Regardless, this series was a showcase of the Tigers hitting and pitching.

Since the start of the Cleveland series on June 6, the Tigers have gone 12-4. If the Tigers can sweep the Cardinals, they will be back to .500 for the first time this season.

Kenny "The Gambler" Rogers is on the mound tonight, Galarraga is up tomorrow night, and Robertson is up on Thursday.

At the start of May, I created a poll asking you to let me know how many Tigers games you've attended in your life. The results are in, and 40% of you have attended 51+ games in your life.

Now, I must confess, I've only been to one Tigers game in my life. It was in April of 1998 with my college roommate. We saw the Tigers play the Baltimore Orioles at Tiger Stadium. I was pretty excited to see Cal Ripkin play as my roommate had scored 3rd row seats along the 3rd base line. I remember the game so well because Brian Hunter led off the game with a solo home run, and then two batters later, Bobby Higginson hit a solo shot. The Tigers won that game 7-1.

Prediction and poll update

On my April 10 post, I predicted the Tigers would finish April with an 18-10 record after starting 1-7. Well, that didn't turn out as well as I hoped it would. However the Tigers have made significant progress going 12-7 since that post. As it currently stands, the Tigers sit in 4th place in the Central Division with a 13-15 record.

They have 28 games in May and my prediction for this month is that they will go 19-9.

In March of this year, I created a poll asking you to provide your best guess at how many games the Tigers would win this year. The results are in, and the majority of you said the Tigers would win between 91 - 100 games.

I've got a new poll up now for the month of May. I'd like to find out how many games you've attended during your time as a Tigers fan.

Ummmmm....yeah

Okay....no need to panic. The Tigers are 2-10 entering two series with division rivals Minnesota and Cleveland. Fortunately for the Tigers, the Twins and Indians are only a few games ahead of them in the standings. So, if the Tigers can sweep both series, they will be tied with Minnesota for third in the division.

Sadly, in my last post, I predicted the Tigers would finish April with an 18-10 record. For this to happen, they would have to win 16 straight games. I'm not saying this is impossible, and I'm the eternal optimist, but I have to be real and admit that 16 straight is pretty tough to pull off.

First win of 2008

Well, it took eight games for the Tigers to get their first win. Those first seven games were not a pretty sight to watch, but last night's game was certainly more fun.

Apparently someone with a lot of time on their hands did some research and found that no team that started 0-7 had gotten their first win off the defending World Series champion. Also, according to these statistics, the odds for the Tigers making it to the World Series are pretty slim. Now I don't know about you, but April and October are separated by a lot of games, right now, 154 games. That's a lot of time to make up for losing the first seven games. Does anyone remember the last few months of the 2006 season? There were some stretches in there that caused some concern, but look where the Tigers ended up. I'm saying all of this to say that you shouldn't count the Tigers out yet. If this were early September and the Tigers were bordering .500, then I'd be a lot more concerned.

My prediction: the Tigers finish April with a 18-10 record.

My Fantasy Baseball Team

Baseball is coming!

I'm starting to see more grass in my backyard so my anticipation is rising for baseball season. Just two weeks ago I had nearly a foot of snow on the ground. Now, I've got large patches of grass and even smaller patches of snow.

Regarding Tigers baseball, the relief pitching questions remain. Will Rodney be ready by April? Will Byrdak or one of the other relief pitchers step up and perform? Will Todd Jones break out of his funk and get command of his pitches?

On the other side, Verlander is looking awesome this spring training. Last I heard was that he had not given up a single run so far. Let's hope that kind of pitching continues throughout the season.

Fantasy Baseball

For the first time ever, I've accepted an invite to join a fantasy baseball league. This particular league is on ESPN. I'm pretty sure I've got a good grasp on how the league works, but I'm unsure as to whom I should be drafting.

Does anyone have a method for drafting players? I mean, I know I should be drafting the best available position player left, but it seems like there should be a science to it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The Detroit Tigers announced some of their game giveaways today, and there is one that immediately jumps to the top of my list.

On April 15, the first 10,000 fans will receive a DVD of the FSN telecast of Verlander's no-no from last season. I was one of the unfortunate few to have to hear about this the following morning in the news recap, so this would be great to be able to watch the entire game unfold.

A close second from the giveaway list happens on my birthday. On June 24, the first 10,000 fans will receive replica road jerseys from the 1968 World Series Championship year. The 1968 road jerseys looked like the jersey below.
